Facts about Lead

Dust From “Disturbed” Lead-Base Paint is a Dangerous and Poisonous Hazard to Children and Expectant Mothers, Adults, and Pets.

Facts About Lead

• Lead can affect children’s brains and developing nervous systems, causing reduced IQ, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems. Lead is also harmful to adults and pets

• Lead is very hazardous and potentially lethal to children under age 6 and the fetus of expectant mothers

• Lead in dust is the most common way people are exposed to lead from activities such as sanding, scraping, brushing, and sand blasting of painted areas

• People may also breathe in toxic fumes when heat is used to remove lead-based paint from surfaces

• People can also get lead in their bodies from lead in soil or paint chips. Lead dust is often invisible

• Lead-based paint was used in 38 million homes until it was banned for residential use in 1978
(Most other countries in the world banned lead-based paint before 1900)

Projects that “disturb” lead-based paint can create dust and endanger:

- The worker doing the work

- Subsequently the worker’s family and his pets

- The home-owners and their children and pets
